Achtung.svg This page is a draft. An announcement requesting feedback will be made shortly.

The OGF admin team would like to invite all experienced mappers to help make OGF a better place, by joining a team, or signing up for a project, or both. Users are free to apply for more than one team, more than one project, etc.

Teams

Map Patrol Team

The Map Patrol is made up of two types of patrollers.

New User Patrollers check for new users editing in the wrong places, and provide them with friendly redirection to the correct areas, using the page OGF:New user patrol. If you'd like to help with this regularly, the only requirement to be listed here is to try making one check per day. (It's fine to miss a day occasionally, to go on vacation, etc.)

Flood Patrollers sign up to receive an automated email whenever flooding is detected, and try to fix it as soon as possible.

Translation Team

Members of this team should periodically check the "View History" of the About page and the FAQ page, to see if there have been any changes, and then update the translations of those pages as necessary, to keep them in sync with the English version. This happens only occasionally; checking in once a month should be adequate.

Wiki Team

This is an opportunity for experienced users to help make our wiki a better place. Specifically:

  • monitoring Special:RecentChanges to ensure vandalism, fighting, abuse, or other bad things are not happening.
  • checking Special:NewFiles once weekly to check for copyright/source info on images, and using Template:Image_issue to request needed information.
  • looking out for outrageous examples of overwikification and tactfully directing such users to OGF:Overwikification
  • maintaining the Featured Content boxes on the wiki main page

Blue Territory Team

These projects involve preparing for the introduction of smaller blue territories. Specifically:

  • creating national and regional names that obviously indicate a specific language (without using well-known names from the real world)
  • building small, limited areas of high quality urban and rural detail to serve as good mapping examples for new users, and to give new users a sense of scale
  • leaving much of the country open for new users to develop

After the territories are opened, volunteers should monitor the territory in a friendly way:

  • redirecting users who misunderstand the language guidelines
  • redirecting users who try to map the whole territory
  • contacting users who are clearly violating OGF rules such as using well-known place names, real companies/organizations, building outrageously unrealistic things, etc.

Volunteers should be native or at least fluent speakers of the target language, and experienced users of OGF. They should also understand and accept the fact that there will be a lot of messy, illogical, horribly bad mapping in these territories, and should be comfortable with that. Such mapping can be improved once the new users move on to their own territory.

Community-Owned Collaboratives Team

These individuals administer OGF's community-owned collaboratives. This entails:

  • Supervising the mapping in such collaboratives and coordinating among the different mappers involved
  • Responding to requests to participate in such collaboratives. For community-owned collaboratives, any qualified mapper should be accommodated in some way.
  • Creating and maintaining a wiki page for the country, and a wiki talk page for collaboration and other discussion.

Second Territory Evaluation Team

This is an opportunity for experienced users who have completed significant areas of detailed, high quality mapping to (as a group) evaluate requests for additional territories, utilizing the framework at OGF:Requesting more territory. This happens very rarely.

Social Media Team

These projects offer an opportunity for longtime users to help people discover OpenGeofiction and give OGF a home on various social media sites.

These places may be used for:

  • socializing among OGF users;
  • sharing images of OGF and links to high quality OGF content;
  • making sure OGF is presented in ways that are clear about what it is, to avoid attracting users who would not be a good fit for the site;
  • "surface level" discussions (discussions of substance should be encouraged to take place in the OGF wiki forums).

  • monitoring User Diaries and the wiki forums to remove any unsuitable content
  • enforcing site rules and banning repeat offenders
  • contacting inactive users and releasing their territories when appropriate

Projects

In addition to the teams above, experienced users can also sign up for various types of projects, many of which are fairly easy and short-term:

Cleanup Projects

These projects involve making formerly owned areas more attractive for new users to claim. Specifically:

  • check to make sure that the territory has not already been assigned to someone (if so remove it from this list)
  • deleting the "name" tag from all objects in the territory
  • resetting the name of the territory back to its original number
  • miscellaneous improvements such as repairing broken territory relations, downgrading extensive motorways, fixing awkward coastlines, etc.
  • searching the wiki for all references to the territory and deleting them, adding the "lost country" tag to its main wiki page
  • removing the country from this list, after all the other items are complete

These projects do not involve deleting all the mapping in a territory. Remember that some new users prefer to claim a territory with significant mapping already in place. Any and all mapping that is halfway decent should remain for a future owner to handle.

These projects are intended for experienced users only.

Wiki Page Projects

These projects are opportunities for experienced users to create new resources for the OGF wiki. Specifically:

  • developing a wiki page on a topic that is clear, brief, and simple to understand
  • soliciting feedback from admin and other experienced users
  • making the page accessible by adding links to it from other pages such as User Help & Resources

Good language skills (and often good graphics skills) are beneficial.

Other Projects / Requests for Proposals

A "Request for Proposal" is a concept from business. It is not an actual project but rather an outline for how a project might be accomplished.

For example, imagine the admin team has decided that we want a new collaborative built in a certain territory. But we don't even know how we want to handle this project. We're not ready to assign it to someone because haven't even decided what the result of the project should look like, or what it should include. So we make a RFP (request for proposal) to see what ideas people have for how the project would be organized. Once we receive several RFPs, we take the best one, maybe change it or modify it, and then it becomes an "official" project. You may also submit a proposal for something that is not listed below, if you have an idea for another good project to benefit the community.

Users interested in making a proposal for any of these projects should send a message to the admin team, so that we can discuss if it's a good fit for you. Please note that no proposal will be approved "automatically" and the admin team is under no obligation to accept any proposal; all participation is at the discretion of the admin team. So be sure to keep any proposal clear and brief and to the point. Invest time and energy in a proposal at your own risk.
