Playa Americana (Castellanese, Ingerish "Américo's Beach") is a suburb in the capital metropolitan region of the Ardispheric Federation. It is located southeast of the metropolitan area, near the ancient colonial city of Palmeras Grises in the federal subject of Departamento del Sur (DS), situated on a southwestward-facing beach on the Bahía Negra.
Playa Americana's current population is about 29,000 inhabitants, in a land area of 18.3 km2.
Name
Playa Americana is named for the Ardispherian Civil War hero, Américo Valdivia.
Geography
The main part of the city is located on a former island, now joined to the mainland by landfill, forming a peninsula separating Laguna Corales to the northwest from the Puerto Palmeras Grises and Estrecho Damascos to the southeast.
History
The suburb was mostly built on reclaimed land, among low-lying coastal dunes and wetlands, in the 1920s and 1930s, when Ardispherians were first discovering the joys of beach resorts and real estate speculation.
Economy
Playa America has an economy centered on the beach-centric tourism and resort industry, on the one hand, while on the other hand it is a center for shipping, transhipment and logistics, being the site of the Gombrowicz y Pak container port, which is the fourth-largest by volume in the Ardisphere.
Transportation
Rail
Several of the Ferrocarriles de Bahía Negra "Black Lines" (commuter rail) stop at the Playa Americana train station, so the city is well-integrated to the regional rail transportation network, RUTA-VC.
Tram
The Palmeras Grises tram line P68 crosses the Estrecho Damascos and runs along the beachfront in Playa Americana.
Bus
Culture
The famous Muelle (pier) features rides, amusements, shopping and restaurants. Nearby is the Estadio de la Playa, where the second-tier football (soccer) team Deportivo Americano (Beach Boys) play.
There is a notable Chogué temple on an inlet of the Laguna Corales, called Templo del Anochecer (Sunset Temple).
The San Bartolomeo church dates from 1943, but is based on a Beaux-Arts plan originally drawn up by the famous Ardispherian architect, Francisco Parker Santangelo
